Walk Day – 31 El Ganso

10/7 – Left Astorga at 6:30 this morning to the little town of El Ganso. This is the last town before I begin to make the climb to Cruz de Ferro at 1,505 meters tomorrow.

Beautiful sunrise this morning. Such a treat!

As fall hits Spain, the colors are definitely starting to change. Still having great weather in the low 70’s, but I expect we will see that change too. The nights and mornings are cooler. The walk today was relatively flat, but the future paths ahead begin to ascend fairly steep. Several of us chose to stop a bit earlier in our trek today and let our legs rest in preparation for tomorrows climb.

Many messages on various signs or statues today.
My place of rest tonight is a Tipi (teepee)! Super fun and can’t wait to give it a try. The Albergue is set up with 8 beds per teepee. Sort of a funny thing to see in Spain but what a great experience! The owners are making us all Paella tonight! Yummm!
Directional signs
Inside tonight’s Tipi. We all had regular beds with plenty of blankets to stay warm. No lights inside.
Paella for tonight’s pilgrim meal
The pilgrims staying in the Tipi’s tonight. two from France, three from Italy, and the three of us from USA.
The moon behind our Tipi tonight. Beautiful!

My thoughts: Today was a shorter walk day as the prior day was a big walk. We all wanted to rest our feet for tomorrows climb…. It’s a big one. Feeling positive, emotional as I get closer to tomorrow, and always grateful.

  1. Interesting, who would have thought of a tipi (teepee) in Spain.? 😃😃
Good luck on tomorrow’s climb! Wishing for you that, by now, your legs are strong and your feet are tough! 🙏

  2. I can not get over that shot of the moon behind your teepee. That might be my favorite picture so far. Dinner looked so good. Are your friends still walking along side you or do you all tend to go on your own and catch up at some other point?

    1. Mike and Viola are still walking with me. Sometimes I walk by myself for a while and then catch up when we rest, sometimes we walk the whole day together.

Hi Charles,  I think it is so smart to rest up before your big climb. A tipi seems like such an interesting accommodation.  Good luck tomorrow!!
