Walk Day 8- Villamayor de Monjardin

Sept 13- Got up early today in Lorca at 6am to get a head start and ahead of the heat. Sunrise is at 7:30 here, so I walked with my headlamp in the dark for a bit. After beautiful views, fun companions, not too difficult of a day, I reached my destination in 17k to Villamayor de Monjardin.

San Veremundo Patron Saint of the Camino de Santiago Navarro region.

Today the heat was gone and replaced by clouds, cool breezes, and just a small amount of rain. It was a welcome weather condition for todays walk. Now we are in the wine country of Spain and the views are just amazing.

So many cool old doors in every town we go.

I walked for a while with my new friend Maggie from Hungary. We got caught in a downpour, but being prepared we just put on our rain poncho’s and kept going.

Later in the day, I ran into my American friends Mike and Viola and ended up walking with them the rest of the day.

A great highlight for me was the pilgrim fountain in the heart of the wine country called Fuente del Vino. Here you have the option of water (which we find all along the Camino) or wine! So that was a fun little detour for a moment and a fun little fountain.

This sign at Fuente del Vino basically says pilgrims will make it to Santiago if they drink wine from this fountain.
Wine out of one tap, water out of the other.

My thoughts: just when you think it’s a rough day or a rough climb, or too hot, the Camino “provides” a nice break and you get a do-able trek with cool breezes that make the walk so much nicer. Spent most of the walk with friends from the walk today. Was super fun and a welcome treat.

  2. I love the wine out of the wall concept… that is so fun. It is neat to see the people you are meeting along the way, and seeing you gives me comfort that you are safe. Keep on going my friend.

  3. Lorca is beautiful with so much history and a big city! Boy, you found everyone’s dream of choosing Water or Wine?!?!? That’s incredible!

    1. There are two Lorcas in Spain. The tiny village in the Navarre region is where I was staying. Not the big city.

I like to think that life is kind of like your Camino trail. Just when you think you are at your wits end, an unforeseen opportunity or helping hand is likely to present itself.
