St. Jean Pied de Port

I made it! The starting point of the Camino de Santiago! This town is so idyllic, surrounded by green hills and the Pyrenees mountains; a little village that you expect Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) to fly out of the bakery and start singing at any moment. The town is full of bakeries and smells of fresh bread and macarons.

The beauty landscape that surrounds St. Jean Pied de Port.

The city is primarily made for walkers as they begin their journey, so there are many here that will start their trek tomorrow as well. I was able to get my remaining provisions (walking sticks) for the walk. Most importantly I was able to get my pilgrims passport that I will need stamped along the way to demonstrate I’ve completed the Camino.

This is the official Camino Santiago pilgrims center where I was able to register as a ‘pilgrim’ and get my official passport.
My Pilgrims passport. This will be filled with stamps from everywhere I stop along my journey to not only record each step as a memory, but to present at the end of the walk to get my ‘Compestella’ certificate of completion. It’s also used to prove you are walking the Camino for entrances into ‘pilgrim only’ accommodations.

It’s warm here today (89 degrees), so tomorrow I will take it slow and steady with plenty of water on hand. As I walk up and over the Pyrenees.

For today, I’m relaxing and taking in my last “nice” hotel for a while, as well as some delicious homemade crème glacée. Will find a fun place for dinner later tonight.

One thing I’m learning already is while there is a high sense of camaraderie with others walking the Camino de Santiago, it truly is respected as a solitary quest giving us time to just be ‘present’. What a gift to be able to spend the next month plus focused on today. ❤️

Tomorrow I take my first steps on this 557 mile journey! I know it will be hard, I know I will be tired… and probably hungry. But still I’m looking forward to every step! 👣.

I know for certain that I will have a few guardian angels who will be walking by my side. 😇

  2. Beautiful! Nothing like silence with Nature and fresh air to clear the mind and soul!. Along the way, when you’ve been alone in your thoughts awhile, I bet you will be wondering the stories of those other walkers! Eat well today!
