Walk Day- 35-36 Fonfría

10/11-10-/12 – left Villafranca on Wednesday morning headed to the very small village of Ruitelán. From there, on Thursday, I made the huge ascent in the mountains to the city of ÓCebreiro, and then to the final destination of the village of Fonfría.

Foggy day in the mountains heading to Ruítelan. The terrain once again has changed to mountain regions surrounding very old and small little villages.
Many cows in the mountains during the climb today. Loved this mama with her new baby.
Little town of Ruítelan. Population 26.

The walk to Ruítelan was crisp, clear, and beautiful today as I slowly headed up to the mountain regions in Spain. The Albergue I stayed at was old, but really quaint and the chef and hotelier really cared for the pilgrims on the trail. They cooked us a beautiful communal meal and really wanted to make sure each of us felt cared for. I sat with people from Sweden, Finland, and the U.S. It was an awesome experience on the Camino.

Hit the trail today that included a large ascent. This will be the last giant climb on the journey, and it was a big one.
As you can see, the climb from Ruítelan to ÓCebriero was a big one. So glad to hit this milestone on the journey.

The mountain ranges and views on the climb were breathtaking on the trail. This climb is well known to be one of the steepest and last big climbs on the path before reaching Santiago. The photos don’t really do it justice. The air was crisp, clear and sunny today (70 degrees). While the journey was strenuous, it sure was nice to be conditioned and I felt good making the climb up.

The beautiful mountains and valley on the climb. Looking back at where I started in the morning way in the distance.
Reaching the summit at Ó Cebriero (elevation at 4,100 feet). Amazing mountains behind me. Just breathtaking!
Statue of a female pilgrim at the summit.
Walking from the summit of ÓCebriero a large group of cattle happened on our path and we all had to share it with them. A bit scary, but everyone behaved.
Another big milestone today was entering the county of Galicia today. Not only will we see different food along the remainder of the journey (Galician food), but Santiago sits in the same county! Big milestone to make it here!!

Galicia is known for thatch roofs and stone buildings. Such was my place for dinner tonight. A delicious Galician meal shared with about 40 other pilgrims from around the world on their journey to Santiago. I sat with people from Germany, Brazil, and the U. S. Very special!

My current location heading west to Santiago.

My thoughts: Today was beautiful in so many ways. The views, weather, people, and accomplishment made for such a great day. Feeling very humble, fortunate, and happy. While I’m looking forward to reaching Santiago and Finisterre, there is some sadness about leaving such an amazing journey it’s different out here on the trail with all the other pilgrims. Something special!

  1. Wow! Sharing the trail with the cattle. That had to be exciting!
The climb, again, looked extreme. I hope it was somewhat easier this time.
Wishing you safe haven and rest for the evening! 🙏
    Thanks for sharing your day.

Just WOW!!  You should be so proud of yourself for climbing those mountains.  What an amazing view.  I feel like I don’t know enough superlatives to describe how in awe I am of you.  Decompressing after this will be a challenge, I bet. Good luck and be safe!
