Walk Day 20 – Hontanas

09/25- Today I walked from Rabe de las Calzadas to the town of Hontanas. The landscape has changed to flat plains for the most part.

Sunrise early AM. Always a beautiful sight.

Walking this morning I can really see the landscape change, as I am now in the Meseta. This is the flatlands or plains of Spain. This will last for about 150km along the Camino. It’s still beautiful, but just very different and makes you focus more on other things than the beauty around you. The sky here is so beautifully blue every day.

Today it’s cold and cloudy with some pretty chilly winds. So I’ve gone from shorts and a T-shirt, to long pants and jacket. I can tell the season is changing, and I expect I’ll be wearing warmer clothes as I continue to walk. My feet and legs feel stronger than ever and I find I can more easily walk longer distances and steep trails.

I’m now walking on trails that were laid over two thousand years ago. Makes me wonder who have walked these paths before me.

Now in the plains of Spain “the Meseta”

My normal morning starts with walking and then finding a place to get a breakfast/coffee later when places open after 9am. Leaving at 6ish, nothing is open usually. So as I entered the town of Hornillos del Camino, it was nice to see a place open to grab some food and coffee.

Stopping in the town of Hornillos del Camino for a much needed snack and coffee.
Love all these unique old doors in each town.
The sky is so beautiful across the bare fields. Pretty much as far as you can see.

Heading into the small one building town of San Bol, I took the time to dip my feet in their pool that is supposed to have “healing powers”. It was extremely cold but felt great on my tired feet.

The healing pool in San Bol. Yes I plunged my feet into the ice cold water. Felt great! Another pilgrim showed up and jumped all the way in.
Love the variety of markers that show pilgrims they way. Always a yellow arrow and always a scallop shell.

After walking for 7 hours today I could finally see the town of Hontanas in the distance. Hontanas has about 100 population with these beautiful old buildings that date back to midevil times.

Walking to my place to rest for the evening, Hontanas. A beautiful old village.

My thoughts: I continue to love this journey. I’m meeting so many great people from all over the world, spending time walking across a beautiful country, and spending time to think inwardly as well. Grateful, appreciative, and humbled each and every day.

  1. Tell us what your walking hours a day have been, the range. Is it between 7-10 hours a day? Also, I love all those doors too.

  2. Another interesting post, Charlie! 😊
I, like you, view the old doors as art. Some also look like fortifications against enemy entry.
The change of landscape and temperature, in the distance you have traveled, is like moving into a different season. Summer to fall but abruptly. It’s good that you have warmer clothes. 😋
Enjoy your evening.. Looking forward to your next posting. 🙏
